Indian Fashion industry is a very young industry if we compared it globally. India is a country, which has an ancient clothing tradition. In early 1980, the first generation of Indian fashion designers started cropping up. ‘Rohit Khosla’ became an explorer in the fashion industry.

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India opened NIFT (National Institute Of Fashion Technology) in 1986 in Delhi with the help of the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. NIFT played an important role to raise locally trained fashion designers. NIFT has developed 15 branches by 2010 across India.

In 1987, Tarun Tahiliani and his wife Shailja founded India’s first multi-designer boutique ‘Ensemble’ in Mumbai.
